boyz II men

It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday, [down] on bended knees, I'll make love to you, water runs dry, a song for mama, end of the road..

so so many great classic songs from Boyz II Men... before all the N'sync, all the backstreet, the westlife, there was them.. and after them, they are still here... 16 years..

They were on a 6 week tour in Europe a week ago and but they were "glad to be home"... and I am so glad I went to their concert... with the right attire too (short sleeve sequin, shorts and flip flops, great in hot weather and for standing throughout the concert)... it's a great one.. a great virgin concert.. linkin park, rock bands like mcr, click five.. or mayday, jazz or slow ones like michael buble would have been a great experience (they are the ones I would love to go for my bd, with bestie...) but for the 1st one, the 1st special one, I can't pick a better place or band for the experience... and I don't even need a camera.. I took many mental pictures.. that may fade with time, may distort with memories .. but will always be around.. no matter what..

a classic band, a band that I hear often in my fav music station, a band that is so american and so loving and heart warming.. its a concert that even kids can go to.. there were many black kids there.. and I think its a great influence... with right role models and all.. and the band even told the audience to whip out their cell and call the mothers when they sang the song... with cell phones amidst the dark dean dome, it looks so beautiful...just like how I always, will always love those many think are cheesy dance moves.. so clean cut, so in-tune with the songs and so so boy-bandish that I absoultely love...

nine days from nashville, new york open for them at 8, with some great songs and also a fav band song: story of the girl... beautiful~... we waited a while while people streamed down nearer to the stage to dance and scream there... and many took the time to take photo with Roy Williams (coach to tar heels men's basketball).. poor guy, cant even get to a concert without getting mobbed.. lol. but I understand his celebrity-like status in UNC.. there were even body guards by his side for heaven's sake...

the organisers came up and talk abt springfest. a festival event is set up for the students (free! paid for the tuition fees and all I believe) as the year comes to a close so there is proper closure.. it has been a amazing academic year, with trips to different parts of the US (my sis may favor Europe over any other place because of her frequency there.. and the many many cities she has been so fortunate to visit but there is no doubt that mine is the US, the thinking, the culture and beautiful people are just breath-taking.. I don't know about Europe but the idea of freedom, progress, hope and optimism here is something that is unique and beautiful) and I cant think of a better time and band to end the year... lol~ it's been such an experience.. and I can't tell you how fortunate I am in NC chapel hill.. there is NO better place to be in..not california, not washinton, boston,NY, belgium, Sweden, Norway.. I mean they are pretty places to be in, but if you are looking for a mixture of tranquillity, study, party, drinking and family culture, action and peace, there is only chapel hill.. it can be boring but it is a uni culture.. through and through.. very american... :)

I am listening to all the amazing hits from their Legacy: Greatest Hits Collection album and it's great.. I am so glad I went there. a perfect end to the beginning...

one shining moment.. you knew you were alive

The ball is tipped
and there you are
you're running for your life
you're a shooting star
And all the years
no one knows
just how hard you worked
but now it shows...
(in) ONE SHINING MOMENT, IT'S ALL ON THE LINE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, THERE FROZEN IN TIME

But time is short
and the road is long
in the blinking of an eye
ah that moment's gone
And when it's done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED DEEP INSIDE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE

Feel the beat of your heart
feel the wind in your face
it's more than a contest
it's more than a race...

And when it's done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED FOR THE SKY
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU WERE WILLING TO TRY
ONE SHINING MOMENT....

wilson library got to be one of the most exquisite library on campus.. with rare books and state collections, the interior is really nice (the chandelier!!), like some mansion's library... sigh and the best thing is, when you are inside, the room can be dark one moment, bright the next cause the room is facing the sun...

the other side of UL (another new place I found, usually v packed though~)

in student union (where we saw chelsea clinton)

was all over the main campus today.... sigh... was in wilson lib till they closed at 5pm. forgot to leave my bag behind (*stick tongue out*) and so I went the Undergrad Library aka UL to print some stuff that I have to complete by this weekend... sigh~~ got chase out again by 6pm and decided to go the the student union.. think its a fri so the area was really empty. normally its packed and all~~ some times can hardly find a place with plugs to sit and discuss projects... finally decide to go and get some grocery at this store near the cafe where I usu get my dinner cause I was too tired to go to Harris Teeter this or next week(next week is laundry day again, unless I am feeling hardworking and decide to do it this week~) so decide to buy some food cause I have nearly wipe my dorm clean.. don't want to be like scott (he ended up eating mustard instead of drinking water when he was really hungry...lol)

yups, got Oreo golden cookies, milk pudding, bubble gum, bread (those good whole wheat ones *smiles*), some really cheap nissin cup noodles and 2boxes of breakfast bars :) abt 20 bucks, not too bad for a on campus store :)

nice song~~

beening derived of my daily doses of crazy djs (class 95, 95% class, 5% wicked Glenn, Flying Dutchman, WTS Vernetta, Jean, Yas, non-stop hits, 987 Young, Desiree, Shann and the Muttons), never-leave-me-by-a-moment-fm-receiver (really bad habit, should try getting rid of it?), I haven been getting by with min music in my life...

not that it happens often, music have been a huge part of me, no matter the young me who can hum the chinese songs whenever I switch on the radio (yes I am that good *smiles*) or the older me that listen to linkin park while attempting maths problem, the late teen who listen to david bedingfield and other love songs during olevels or the uni me who listen just to get people off my back (whenever I am feeling anti-social, which can be pretty much of the time)... I dont think music have left me long enough...

now, I get by with youtubes...really troublesome when you need to loop the same song when you are sleeping, you have to put the lappie really close (now I sleep beside it), sometimes with older songs I have in vv (aka lappie) especiallt after fb took all my fav songs off~~ arg! I had some great songs there~~ all my current fav...

been listening to this taiwan soundtrack this couple of days.. really nice :)

college basketball

camera (the lights) everywhere ~

flags...wish 2008 one was up there~

camera everywhere.. at a point whenever the camera went, the cheers start..

hard to take a decent picture of anything.. tried a dozen modes..

weird camera mode.. really in carolina blue aint it.. the entire stadium was essentially in blue anyways, blue bathroom doors, blue seats and cushions, blue flags hanging everywhere...

the carolina blue ice cream~

the dean dome

the thing about sports, even if you don't play it, even if you can't understand all the rules (the fouls never make much sense to you), even if you don't have that gift to take part in the magic, even if you don't watch it being play on tv/live... it has this natural ability to make you feel this sense of belonging, to make you feel like you are part of something bigger and stronger than who you really are...

I have been a proud supporter of manchester united since the treble (if you are a fan, you know when that is, if you are not, then forget it...) and it is NOT because of db.. gosh... before he was sold, I was so sick of trying to tell people that he is not the reason I like manchester... he was the reason why I noticed the team and come on, after the world cup 98 and the treble later on, it's hard not to know who the red devils are..

I have been with them so much , through the best, the worst, the ugly, the disappointment, the frustration, the anxiety, the glory, the honour, the pain, the saddness. The arrival of promise(wayne, ronaldo, nani, anderson, erwin), the departure of legends (ole, roy, ruud (?), teddy, cole, yoke, peter), the blossoming of legacy (wayne, ronaldo), the disappearance of favourites (db, nicky, neville), the anger of new owners (malcolm), the speculations of retirement, the upsetting of morale, the plunging in faith, the vanishing sense of hope, the generation of hype for more silverware.. I have been through all of that and more..half way around the globe...

I am not raised there, not seen the old trafford, not been any where near the theatre of dreams... just like how it is not all the players' boyhood dreams to play there, not the first club they have been with and yet they play with all their pride...and I support with all my might..

college basketball is some thing the US students are more interested in than the soccer.. and somehow, I think I am beginning to see why..

the more I see it, the more different these 2 are.. closer to the values I hold, college basketball is (sounds like yoda for a second there... don't I...lol if you get what I mean *nudge, nudge, smile, smiles*)

that place is not just the place they play for, it is not just a team, it is more than that, a community, a school for the boys, the place they live, spent most of the time at, the place they make friends, have meals, study, have fun, practice together.. Unlike football clubs, the college means more to them in these 3/4 years..

now for the game review...

the game ended horribly.. it was a playing catchup all along(yes since the 1st sec) there was bad defense (sometimes none to speak of) there was bad attacking (even if the nine hundredth times showed that their 3-pointers were all off, the turn overs are not working, kanas defense were much tighter and more effective, the lose balls were punishing them too heavily, the jumpshots are their best chance, the fouls are not the way to win a game, at least not against a strong, admirable team that plays rough, tough and dirty)

yes, it was all that, not forgetting the(probably)1st in history 28 points gap (at least in NC's tournement this season), the sloppy first half and last several minutes of 2nd half..

I am a fan, but I am not blind, not in the eyes, nor in the mind or heart.. I judge, I criticise, I speak poorly of my team's performances.. but I never give up on them, never lose my faith in them, never lose hope, never abandon them nor ditch them in troubled times.. because I know the team I chose to fall in love with and support is more than that.. we crawled our way back from the 1st half to a really close 4 points gap.. but could never get close enough to kill the game eventually..

it was sad, disappointing and the atmosphere was immediate.. those who left early, the dejected that slowly streamed out of the dean's dome, the angry shouting afterwards.. it is heart-wrenching to say the least, like all loss are... but we win some, we lose some, just that some losses are worst, more heavily penalty than others, more heart breaking...

it must be harder on the players.. cause we cursed, we swore, we blamed, we cried at the injust, shouted at the fouls, cheered at the goals, grinced at the lack of defense.. and they? they are right in the middle of all of these... and it must be hard on individuals like hansbrough, green and ginyard.. to have it all, to earn all the credits, the praise, the tropheys, the mvps, the cheers and yet lose in the big games, to not win the vital match, to not be able to celebrate the ulitmate glory as a player with his team..

just like how roy, ole, scholes, beckham, giggs never won with their country, just like how zidane never got that world cup in his last year...all great players have that moment of anguish.. but I wish only the best for the boys...

had to go watch some clips of man u matches so i dont get too upset... need something to cheer me up... other than a finance project or problem set..

talk.. talks..talking....talked...

lol~~ went for the J&J CEO Mr. William Wheldon talk and hear him speak about the company's credo.. was mildly impressed as I always lean towards P&G when it comes to the retail consumer group companies.. but J&J is part of many childhood and it is a great place I think, especially with its extensive R&D arm and all.. a great place to work for, especially after apparently a zillion interviews with the staff...

met cloe and kim, was very happy to see them.. they are very generous, telling me that we need to exchange address before we leave cause we may visit each other one of these days... call us, they say, even if its 10 years down the road...lol~~ had a great reception at the forbidden dining hall( cause apparently lots of seniors, till now, didn't realise that they can go in for events and all..)

decide to skip Pilate's class (my fav!!) to go for another talk with the girls... they have a korean american guy (kelvin han) who is in the kenan-flagler investment club and they have invited Morgan Stanley NY branch people to come down for a talk.. it was great opportunity, not one you get everyday so I was glad I went.. learn so much from the talk...

The people are from the equity research analysis arm of MS and they were great.. their job sounds totally cool but once again, if you are not interested in investment banking, private banking or wealth management, the career office apparently takes you as invisible.. (there are just too much emphasis on these areas that the rest are naturally neglected..) there are hardly any marketing or even in this case an aspect of the financial institution.. man.. it's going to be an uphill battle.. but what's life without some struggle. challenge and battle wound right?

oh well, might as well put this up.. the picture of my dessert (usually I will only get one slice each time I visit the cafe~) sis: just to make you drool.. one is the cheesecake stick (the cafe has the best cheesecake... the other cakes are not as good) and the other one is the lemon pie.. nice but very sweet.. I love the crust and all~~ and decide not to take the huge part of the cream and lemon pudding like stuff~~

the MS people... I managed to get the girl's name card and the rest contact number as well but they are probably too busy to ever reply me.. oh wells~~ one of the guy look soooo much like Michael Vartan, the cute CIA agent from the teevee show Alias (see I told you, I have watched like all the American tv shows that Channel 5 ever aired at some point in time... sigh~~)

the forbidden dining hall.. if you see carefully, there is a painting of a hunted deer at the end... apparently it was more bloody when it was first painted, with the deer's gut all out and exposed... the painter wanted to portray the real hunting experience (in a dining hall no less~~) but Mrs Kenan-Flagler took one look and asked the painter to alter it... so the deer's gut are all "sew up" but you can still see the difference in colour of the deer~~ (as told by my global marketing and consumer behavior professor didow~)

great reception! I didn't even have to get other stuff for dinner... that's white wine I think.. but not really my cup of tea.. I am still a tiger girl~ the finger food are great though~

Mr Wheldon talking.. :) he is rather impressive, worked in MS as well~~

well~~ will put up McColl (aka kenan-flagler building name) next time

texas

From left: Epili Sagar, Laura Chiu, Jane Ng and me.. I recalled Epili saying what a girlie frame this was... this was taken just after we presented the 1st time and was waiting for the results.. :) what memories.. I was on the same flight back with Epili and what a good company he was! slept throughout and we only talked during the waiting period... :)

I rem my first post on this webbie is about the texas trip... sigh how time has passed... if texas was on the exchange list, given what has happened there.. I would have gone to UT... I miss texas, just like how I will miss UNC (more!) when I leave on the 13th May... Sigh.. never saw much of Texas beyond the 5th ave and the courtyard hotel but it is a pleasant place to be in, large space, huge lands and nice buildings (not tooo tall one though, my hotel was the highest in the neighbourhood)

Little reminiscing cause I just received an email informing us the the NUS Mcgill team is 2nd place!! WE rock!! (1st place is difficult cause we won last year and there is an unwritten rule that the same school dont usually get 1st place 2 consecutive years) and one of the teammate from texas is on the team... I emailed to congrats him and he wrote back fast saying he " have been so lucky to be part of the two teams that performed the best this year in case competitions"( I am on one of that team!!)

told him of my plan to go for loreal next.. hopefully he will be interested as well? lol he is a great asset the case study, fast thinker, good debater and a great teammate to have, great fun, lots of jokes. I think we are a great team :) and as I told him, one thing that I always say about my texas trip is that I have good team mates.. it don't mean we see eye to eye all the time. but we dont waste time arguing, fighting among ourselves (heard some teams that collaborate well in practice did that in the real competition... what a waste~) we respect each other, make time for fun, joke around, didnt take offense and just soak in the moment and have lots of fun! We may not all know each other... the 2 girls knew each other (they went to UT together and was delighted to go back there~~ I know I would) but the rest are all new faces...

I remember being happy to be selected on the team and being so strange to the new faces.. took a few meeting and kinda overnight practices to get use to each other and start joking around...we were most comfortable during the actual competition~~ 60 crazy hours, 50+ on thinking about our idea, 2 hours(?) on the actual ppt slides

sigh hope to meet them soon.. the 2 girls are graduating soon~~ We dont talk much after the case but I hope to see them around.. It is fun while it last and like what the instructor said in his first practice.. Is it important that you have chemistry and click really well in a team? To which, I answered, as long as we all have our eyes on the goal (to do well after spending so much effort on practicing, spending a week before school close for the final exams, we need to go there and achieve something), we will get there...

We got there.
